Keep Hunger at Bay

By now you surely know that whole grains are chock full of fiber and that fiber helps keep hunger away. Now that school is back in session, why send your precious one back to school with anything less than the best?

Grains Every Day

Everyday, GH has at least two whole grain breads to choose from, which have between 3 and 5 grams of fiber per serving. Hopefully you've tried them all. If you aren't a fan of grains, try a gentle transition with our Honey Whole Wheat. If you love a hearty bread, have a go at High Five Fiber, our highest fiber bread.

We hope to see you soon. Your friends at the Great Harvest in Columbia.

September Goodies

We are brimming over with new goodies and renewed favorites for September!

This month we are trying a brand new bread called Finnish Pulla bread. It's a sweet bread with cardamon which gives it a nice floral aroma. Also new to the menu is Basil Parmesan. How great will that be with all your fall soups and pastas?

Old Classics
We know you've missed some of your old friends like Pumpkin Chocolate Chip, Apple Crunch Bread, Onion Dill Rye, Ginger Bops and Mint Blarney Cookies! Be sure to check out our menu to see what days they are available.

Holiday Treats
Is it too early to mention the treats we will have for the Jewish Holidays? Probably not! In addition to our Round Challah with or without golden raisins, we will have Apple Walnut Honey Swirl, Vanilla Almond Swirl and Jewish Apple Cake. We strongly encourage you to place your orders early and pay for them ahead of time too! That way, all you have to do is pop in and pick up. We will do our best to get you out in a jiffy!

Be sure to follow us on Facebook and check our website from time to time. Both places offer an occasional good deal. And don't forget our email list. You can sign up for it in the store or on the website. Links to both FB and the website are all over this blog.

We hope to see you soon! Your friends at the Great Harvest in Columbia.

Don't Forget the Bread!

We know you have a huge list of supplies to buy before Irene hits. We wish to caution about your bread. You are running out and that other mushy grocery store bread might be tempting, but you don't want to do that! Our bread is healthier and tastier. We use no additives or preservatives in any of our baked goods. We mill our own wheat, just like Henny Penny! And if you're concerned about time, you can call your order in and pre-pay!

Easy Meals
We remind you all fall and winter about our fast and easy soup mixes, but we think today is the perfect day to stock up on those, too. Many of them require very few additional ingredients and can be prepared in an hour or less.

Don't forget the sweets!
Our cookies are so yummy and our Carrot Cake is amazing! We also have Cinnamon Swirl bread. We can't think of a better Tropical Storm breakfast treat for your family.

There are so many reasons to make GH one of your pre-storm stops! We hope to see you soon! Your friends at the Great Harvest in Columbia.

Tasty Lunches and Quick Dinners

It's that rush, rush, rush time of year! This week is crazy with Ice Cream Socials, Open Houses, Teacher meetings, and all that last minute shopping! Who has time to make lunch or dinner? We do! We have the best sandwiches around! And the variety is to die for! You can get the most basic sandwich with ham, turkey or roast beef. Or you can try something a bit more fancy, like our Power House, Cali Cobb or Hummus Delight. All our sandwiches are made with very high quality meat and cheese. Our veggies are fresh and flavorful. And so we really need to tell you how great our bread is.

Sandwich Tray for Dinner
Imagine this. It's been a long day of shopping for the last minute supplies, lunchbox treats, new clothes and shoes and everyone is tired. Then, like magic, you appear with a beautiful tray of GH sandwiches made on Challah Rolls. The crowd will go wild! We're certain by now, you've had our Challah. This traditional Sabbath egg bread is slightly sweet, light and fluffy and incredibly versatile. It makes a great sandwich, tremendous French Toast and delectable Bread Pudding. Pair it up with our Chicken or Tuna Salad and you will have a fast, and delightful dinner that will energize for the evening's events.

TOO HOT!!!!

In a rare occurrence, we have decided to skip soup today. Seriously, who can eat hot soup on a day like this? We have a great assortment of sandwiches, though. We recommend the Power House or Hummus Delight. Both are filled with veggies so they won't overfill you.

Don't Forget the Pie!!
Need we remind you that it's PIE DAY!!! Our wonderful Sour Cream Fruit Pies are available. And we don't care what nutritionists say, pie is acceptable to eat for all meals when the heat index is expected to reach 115! Cupcakes on a day like this? Never!

We hope to see you soon. Your friends at the Great Harvest in Columbia.

Too Hot for your Ovens?

It's never too hot for ours! And in case you weren't aware, it is perfectly legitimate to serve sandwiches for dinner on swelteringly hot days! We can make them for you, or you can come get a fresh loaf of Old Fashioned White, Honey Whole Wheat or Challah, and put together your family favorites yourself. If you are looking for something to grab and take with you to the pool or (heaven forbid, especially in this heat) baseball game, pick up a few Pepperoni Rolls.

And naturally, you'll want some of our Iced Coffee. Unlike some of those other coffee places, we use fresh roasted coffee beans, not something that's been sitting around for 6 months. The difference is astounding!

We hope to see you soon! Your friends at the Great Harvest in Columbia.

2011 Summer Reading Edition

Welcome to the 3rd GHBC Summer Reading Edition of our blog. In this post, we will bring you up to date on some of the finest reads of the summer (according to fancy list makers and the fabulous bakery staff). What sets us apart from all those other reading lists, is our ability to match the perfect baked good with our reading recommendations!

Topping off our list this year is The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, by Michael Chabon; the story of the lives of two Jewish cousins before, during and after World War II. Obviously, you'll need a loaf of our wonderful Challah to go with this book.

Next, we have it on good authority that everyone is still reading The Help, by Katherine Stockett the story of a southern lady who returns home to the south and begins her quest to be a writer. She gets a job as a columnist for the local paper who doles out advice on housecleaning, which of course, she has never done so she enlists the help of the family maid. Pie will be the only thing we can suggest you have with this read. Don't fret! Our Sour Cream Fruit Pie is MUCH better than the pie in the book!

With the last movie due to be released in just 10 days, you must rush to catch up on the adventures of Harry Potter and all his friends in the book series by JK Rowling. Since Potter and friends did enjoy their visits to the Three Broomsticks in Hogsmeade, we know they would love GHBC. We think they would approve of all our sweets, but we believe they would go nuts for our Snickerdoodles!

The Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon continues to be among the favorites of the ladies at GHBC. This capitvating tale of Claire and Jamie whose love for each other transcends time, will leave you breathless. In keeping with the Scottish theme of the book, get some GHBC Fruit and Cream Cheese Scones, though a shot of a nice stiff scotch may suit you better.

Our last recommendation for you is Tina Fey's book, Bossypants. We've been waiting to hear all about Tina Fey and this should be the only source you will ever consult. Grab a Chocolate Brownie Bread, and nibble away as you barrel through this tale of Tina's life before, during and after SNL helped make her a star.

If you need more reading recommendations, stop by the bakery and ask for Langan.

We hope to see you soon. Your friends at the Great Harvest in Columbia.

Sourdough Day!

You may not know the effort that it takes to make Sourdough. The dough starter is worked for days and fed several times before it can be turned into one of the many varieties of bread we make. In addition to the new Everything Sourdough, we offer Cinnamon Raisin and Parmesan. They are all great with summer soups and salads and the Cinnamon Raisin makes great French Toast!

Teacher Love
If you have been too busy with "graduations," concerts, recitals, playoffs, etc and still need a teacher gift, do not despair! We can report that teachers LOVE goodies from Great Harvest. From a simple loaf of Honey Whole Wheat with Stonewall Kitchen Jam to a gift card or gift basket, we have many ideas for you. Stop by and we'll help you get something together fast!

Add Some Pizzazz to your Grill

Enjoy your favorite GH breads grilled! Brush your bread with olive oil and grill to perfection for a delicious accompaniment to your cook outs. Try Foccacia, Cheddar Garlic, Parmesan Sour Dough, Popeye or Asiago Pesto with your grilled meats, fish or veggies.

Summer Menu

Don't forget, beginning in June our menu stays the same for the entire summer. But watch this space for updates on unofficial Baker's Specials. We are known to try new recipes with new ingredients.

There is a slight change today. Instead of Cherry Almond Scones, we have Cherry Scones. If you haven't had a GH scone recently, this is a great one to try to reacquaint yourself with this delectable treat. We use whole cherries, fresh butter and many of our scones are dotted with chunks of cream cheese. Pair your scone with our fresh brewed coffee (hot or iced). You will not be sad.

We hope to see you soon. Your friends at the Great Harvest in Columbia.

Easter Breads II

With just five days to shop for bread, don't forget the great things we have for your Easter table!

Hot Cross Buns - Better than you've ever had. Some believe these rolls date back to the 12th century when an Anglican monk baked rolls and placed a cross on them to honor Good Friday. Our Hot Cross Buns are slightly sweet and have just the right amount of raisins with an artistically applied cross.

Easter Ambrosia Bread - Another beautiful sweet bread. Made with pureed orange and lemon, raisins, almonds and more. Shaped in a loose braid, this will make a beautiful addition to your Easter table.

Honey Bunnies - Too cute for words! We take our delectable Honey Whole Wheat bread and shape it like a sweet little Easter bunny. Use it as a centerpiece, put it in the kids' Easter baskets, or hollow out the center and fill it with your favorite dip. (We have many in store if you need some suggestions.)

Call in your order today. We hope to see you soon. Your friends at the Great Harvest in Columbia.

Spring Sports Leaving your Dinner Table Bare?

Don't forget about sandwiches! Sandwiches can make a hearty, quick meal that will please everyone. Here are some ideas.

Paninis on our Old Fashioned White Bread - Keep it simple with just meat and cheese or really jazz it up. Try sauteed mushrooms and onions with cheddar and top that with fresh spinach. Serve with a salad or fresh fruit. Quick and easy to fit into your practice schedule.

Open Faced Lasagna on Parmesan Sour Dough - With meat or without. Take a slice of bread, spread on some herbed cream cheese, your sauce, and top with provolone (or mozzarella). Bake until the cheese has melted and everything is warm.

Grilled Cheese on Cheddar Garlic - This has got to be one of the best breads to use for Grilled Cheese. Just please don't use American Cheese. If you want, try another one of our savory breads, like Red Pepper Swiss!

Easter Approaches
We'll have an excellent selection of breads for Easter, like Easter Ambrosia, Hot Crossed Buns and our wonderful Honey Bunny Breads. Call in your orders now!

We hope to see you soon. Your friends at the Great Harvest in Columbia.

Luck of the Irish

It's your luck too, this month! So many yummy things to choose from this month. We hope you can handle it! We've already mentioned our fantastic Irish Soda Bread. We will also have Irish Baked Potato Bread. This hearty delight is brimming with chunks of potatoes, and black pepper and topped with cheddar cheese and chives. It's great with soup or stew. Our cheesey breads are very popular and this month, we have Gouda Stout. Smokey Gouda cheese (you know we don't skimp on the cheese in 0ur breads!) is set off nicely by the slightly sweet flavor of the wheat. A light sprinkle of salt on the top will keep all your taste buds tingling! And available only on March 17th, we have our Reuben Bread. Corned Beef, Swiss Cheese, Sauerkraut, all swirled in our fabulous Rye Bread. It's a meal unto itself!

Craving a Sweet
You should try our Chocolate Mint Blarney Cookies. We have no evidence that they have magical powers like their namesake stone, but we promise you will still love them!

Sandwiches for March
What would March be at Great Harvest without the Best Reuben Ever? Our Reuben is made with Corned Beef, Swiss, Cole Slaw and Thousand Island Dressing. It's the best sandwich you will ever have. If you prefer a slightly ( and we mean slightly) lighter version, try the Rachel with Turkey.

Lots is store for you. We hope to see you soon! Your friends at the Great Harvest in Columbia.

Irish Soda Bread

There are lots of traditions surrounding Irish Soda Bread. Soda Bread was first made in the mid 1800's, when bicarbonate of soda became available as a leavening agent. Our Irish Soda Bread is prepared as a small round loaf with raisins and a deep cut cross in the top.

Many people believe that the cross was cut in the bread to ward off evil or to let the fairies out of the bread. Unfortunately, as much as we love a good myth, the truth is far less interesting. The cross is cut to help with the cooking of the bread by allowing air circulation so that the bread rises better.

In addition to the Irish variety, Soda bread is popular in Serbia, where is is prepared at Christmas time. A coin is often put into the dough during the kneading; other small objects may also be inserted. At the beginning of Christmas dinner, the česnica is rotated three times counter-clockwise, before being broken among the family members. The person who finds the coin in his piece of the bread will supposedly be exceptionally lucky in the coming year.

Irish Soda Bread is available today and will continue to be available in March. We recommend you call ahead and reserve a loaf or two. We can never seem to make enough of this tasty treat. And once you've toasted it and slathered it with butter, you'll know why!

We hope to see you soon! Your friends at the Great Harvest in Columbia.

King Cakes Coming Soon!

King Cakes are coming. The King Cake is believed to have originated in France around the 12th century. These early Europeans celebrated the coming of the three wise men bearing gifts twelve days after Christmas calling it the Feast of the epiphany, Twelfth Night, or King's Day. The main part of the celebration was the baking of a King’s Cake to honor the three Kings. The cakes were made circular to portray the circular route used by the kings to get to the Christ Child, which was taken to confuse King Herod who was trying to follow the wise men so he could kill the Christ Child. In these early King Cakes a bean, pea, or coin was hidden inside the cake. The person who got the hidden piece was declared King for the day or was said to have good luck in the coming year. In Louisiana, Twelfth Night also signifies the beginning of the carnival season which ends with Mardi Gras Day. The bean, pea and the coin have been replaced by a small plastic baby to symbolize the Christ Child. The person who gets the baby is expected to carry on the carnival festivities by hosting the next King Cake party.

We are ready to take your orders now for King Cakes. They will be available in the store on Mardi Gras which is March 8th this year so don't delay!

We hope to see you soon. Your friends at the Great Harvest in Columbia.
