Red Velvet Heaven

Looking for something festive for your holiday dessert? Then our Red Velvet Cake is the thing for you. Today is the LAST DAY to try it before it is only available by order for Christmas week! There are lots of stories about the history of Red Velvet Cake. Our favorite involves a woman who had the cake at the famed Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York. She loved it so much, she contacted the hotel for the recipe. They sent it to her, along with a hefty bill! She was so enraged, she copied the recipe and sent it to all her friends and family.

We have no way of knowing if this is true. We do know that our incredibly delectable Red Velvet Cake DOES NOT come with a hefty price tag. Brave the cold and come try some today.

We hope to see you soon! Your friends at the Great Harvest in Columbia.

Gift Central

Who doesn't like a freshly baked treat? No one we know! We are here to help you come up with an inexpensive, tasty gift for everyone on your list. We have "Grab and Go" gifts starting at $7.00, and from there, your imagination is the limit.

Here are some recommendations for those close to you

Teachers - We have it on good authority that all teachers love our batter breads. Give a gift of Chocolate Brownie Bread, Gingerbread, Pumpkin Chocolate Chip or Eggnog Bread. Your kid will be the teacher's pet for the rest of the year.

That someone with everything - At some point, even this person with every gadget and gizmo known to man must eat. How about a gift of bread and jam? A simple loaf of Old Fashion White, Honey Whole Wheat or Challah with a jar of Stonewall Kitchen or GH Jam will be a hit!

Your "Hostess with the Mostest" - We have so many delicious breads that will make a great addition to any party. Our favorites are Cheddar Garlic (Fridays) and Popeye (Saturdays). You may want to call ahead for both of these. And make sure you have us hold a loaf for you, too!

No one has as much fun getting you ready for the Holidays as we do. We hope to see you soon. Your friends at the Great Harvest in Columbia.

November Goodies

Of course by now, you know of our Thanksgiving week offerings. It's never too early to call us and place your order for bread, rolls, pies... And don't forget our wonderful Pancake Mix so you can make something special for breakfast while you watch the Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Now let's talk about some of the other tasty treats in store for you this month. Back for another holiday season is the now famous Turkey Gobbler Sandwich. Made on your choice of bread (we recommend Stuffing Bread), this sandwich combines all that is great about Thanksgiving in one (not so) small lunch delight. We take our fresh turkey breast, homemade cranberry sauce, lettuce, tomato and onion.

Looking for a sweet treat? Try our Vanilla Almond Swirl or our Pumpkin Swirl Bread. Both are best served warm.

If you crave something savory, let our Spinach Feta or Mediterranean Olive tempt your taste buds.

Let us Make Lunch

Our sandwiches are becoming wildly popular! Don't miss out on the excitement. In addition to the sandwiches that have made us famous like the California Cobb, Monster Foccacia, Chicken Salad and Power House, we have some excellent (fairly) new Panninis on the menu. Should we tell you more about them? Probably. Are we going to? No. We want you to come in and find out for yourself!

Our sandwiches are the most delicious in town. They are made with only the finest, fresh ingredients. And of course, you can't beat a sandwich made on GH bread.

Our breads have no additives or preservatives. They all start with the five basics of bread baking; flour, water, yeast, salt and sweetener. From there, we add the other stuff; generous amounts of fruits, nuts, grains or cheese. Our breads stay fresh on the counter for 7-10 days.

Don't deprive yourself any longer. Stop by today for lunch. We hope to see you soon! Your friends at the Great Harvest in Columbia.

Summer Reading issue

Our summer reading issue last year was a great success so here is the 2010 issue. In it, we will recommend treats from Great Harvest to accompany your favorite books.

Any Stieg Larson book (aka the Millennium series) - We recommend Onion Dill Rye to accompany your reading of these books. If you can handle it, add some very Swedish pickled herring!

Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer - While you're trying to figure out who Bella will choose (Edward...Jacob...Edward... Jacob...) do your best to ward off any local vampires by having some of our most popular savory bread, Cheddar Garlic! This bread is great for the grill, too. Just brush it with some olive oil (with even more garlic) and grill for a minute or so on each side. Great with all summer salads.

The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake by Aimee Bender - You taste no sadness in our cakes. If you don't believe us, try the Chocolate Brownie Bread or Almond Pound Cake. They will make you feel light and happy.

The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein - Obviously, you must get your best friend some dog treats to munch while you work your way through this story of Enzo's final days. And since many of our customers report that their dogs will go to great lengths to get our Challah, we think it would go very well with this book.

Percy Jackson Series by Rick Riordan - Popular with kids ages 9 and up, these books deserve to be served up with some of our Chocolate Chip cookies. Add your own milk and watch as your children enrich themselves this summer.

Stop by for more reading recommendations. We hope to see you soon. Your friends at the Great Harvest in Columbia.

Heat Got You Down?

Us too! Imagine baking in this inferno! But we do it because we love you and you love our bread!

Remember, Wednesday is Sour Dough day. Sour Dough is so excellent for grilling. Brush with some olive oil (we have several Pino Oils to recommend) and grill for a minute or two on each side. Grilled bread is excellent for Bruschetta (we have recipes) and also makes a perfect side for summer salads.

If you haven't checked out our sandwiches recently, you should come in for an update. We have a panini press now and can make your favorite GH sandwich warm for you. And don't forget, we can help you prepare for all your summer gatherings with a tray of sandwiches. Call for information on pricing.

We hope to see you soon. Your friends at the Great Harvest in Columbia.

Where Do We Start?

There are so many fascinating things to write about this month? Where can we possibly start?

Treats
Some of our favorite sweet treats are on the menu this month. On Tuesdays, stop by for Blueberry Coffee Cake. Lots of blueberries, crunchy topping. So yummy! On Thursdays, we have our Almond Pound Cake, and heavens, is it tasty! Sweet cream butter, almond pastry filling...Mmmm... Delicious! It's perfect with summer fruits, ice cream or better yet, homemade whipped cream. Speaking of fruit, on Fridays this summer, we will have our Sour Cream Fruit Pies. Lots of fruit, yet not too sweet like those grocery store pies. And lots of flavors to choose from.

Grains
Have you tried our newest grain bread? It's called Ho. Co. Bread. We have it on Saturdays this month. We take flax seed, sunflower seeds, walnuts and pecans and add cranberries and golden raisins. We know you'll love this one as much as all the other great grain breads we offer all week.

Our Grads
It is with mixed emotions that we say CONGRATULATIONS to our Howard High graduates. Langhan, Nikki and Kameron. Langhan and Nikki will be around this summer before they head off to college this fall. Thankfully, we will keep Kameron around a little longer than that. We are so proud of all their accomplishments and we'll miss them tremendously.

Stay tuned for more news! We hope to see you soon. Your friends at the Great Harvest in Columbia.

Besides the fresh, delicious bread, we offer the finest quality meats and cheeses, hand selected vegetables and homemade spreads and salads. Today seems like a great day for Chef Paul's delightful Chicken Salad on fresh Honey Whole Wheat. We also recommend the Cucumber & Rye sandwich on our Onion Dill Rye. It's the perfect combination of fresh and savory flavors.

One Day, One Dollar, One Goal

Please remember to visit us on Friday, April 23rd for a very special event. On Friday, we will be participating in a franchise-wide fundraiser to help the fight against Lymphoma. One dollar from every loaf of bread we sell will go to fight this disease in honor of our friend Mauri, who sadly lost his battle. His legacy lives on, though and we hope to see a full house on Friday and raise record funds to honor Mauri. Check out our website for bread offerings!
New Jam!

We just got in a new shipment of Great Harvest Jams and boy are they great. There are many varieties to choose from; old favorites and some new flavors, too. At $5.00 a jar, they're quite a bargain. We'll have some on the counter to try with that big sample slice. In addition to the new jam, we have new nut butters from Naturally Nutty. Come in and try the Pepito Sun Seed Butter made with pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and a dash of all spice. It's a unique taste you are sure to love.

Busy Month

We have so many exciting things planned for April! Here is a preview. The most important one, One Day, One Dollar, One Goal is listed first but please read on for more bakery fun.

This month we are doing a SPECIAL EVENT in support of our franchise family. Over the past year, one of the bakery owners has been fighting lymphoma with great courage, humor and with a knowledge that his last contribution here on earth would be his own personal fund raising to help find a cure. He lost the battle with cancer but he won many hearts while he worked for hope for others. The Franchise has come together to honor this man and to continue his campaign to find a cure. Almost all of the bakeries are supporting One Day, One Dollar, One Cure where we will contribute a dollar from each loaf of bread sold to go toward the fight against lymphoma. Our day to join the battle is April 23rd . We encourage all of you to come in and help us fight this deadly disease in the hopes of funding and finding a cure. Our comrade's name was Mauri and we are sure that he is still smiling and still working for a cure through all of us. Hope to see you on this very special day.

Quotes on Bread

Today we begin an occasional series of quotes on bread. Bread has been a staple in human diets since, well, we don't really know when. But it's been around a long time. It satisfies the appetite and warms the soul. And it has inspired reknowned chefs and writers to wax eloquently about the many virtues of bread. And remember, if you want to have a really good loaf of bread, the kind all these brilliant people are extolling; there really is only one place to come; Great Harvest!

We hope you enjoy!

It's BUNNY TIME!!!

We are so excited to be getting ready for full blown bunny time. If you have no idea what we're talking about, look to that cute picture in the upper left corner of this post. Each year for Easter, we make the most adorable and tasty, Honey Bunnies from our Honey Whole Wheat Bread. This bread is slightly sweet and melt in your mouth delicious on its own, but turn it into a cute little bunny and it may be more than you can handle.

We will have Honey Bunnies to sell in the store, but your best bet for securing a bunny for your Easter celebration is calling ahead and ordering one. We are hoping to have all orders in by Tuesday, March 30 so we can plan our production schedule for the rest of the week.

Break out the Grill

Now that the snow has melted and the rain has past, you aren't going to let a little mud get in the way of your grilling, are you? We have so many ideas for you so fire up that grill and read on for some great ideas.

We rearranged our shelves so our Stonewall Kitchen Grilling Sauces and Marinades really stand out. Most of these sauces are great with the meat of your choice. Many are also fantastic with vegetables.

And wait until you see the Pino Oils. When the sun comes through the window, they radiate the colors of warmth and remind us that winter is a memory, a cold, snowy, school-less, memory. In addition to being great simply for using as a dip for our savory bread, we like to brush it on our Sourdough which we then throw on the grill for a great accompaniment to your entree.

We are ready to get you into the spirit of grilling again. Come in and ask us about what we use on our grills.

We hope to see you soon. Your friends at the Great Harvest in Columbia.

History Lesson

Did you know the history of Hot Crossed Buns? You may associate the name with the little ditty your child learned when they first started playing violin, but Hot Crossed Buns are really a delicious baked good. These slightly sweet rolls, often baked with dried fruit, are made in the Lenten season and are iced with a cross shape as a symbol of the crucifixion.

Of course, not everyone observes Lent. Many people viewed the four sections of the roll made by the cross shaped icing as a representation of the four quarters of the moon.

Of course, who has the BEST Hot Crossed Buns in Howard County? Why Great Harvest, of course! Hot Crossed Buns are available throughout March, on Thursdays and will also be available for your Easter dinner.

Stop in and try them soon! Your friends at the Great Harvest in Columbia.

There really isn't much to say about our Irish Soda Bread. It is so loved by the masses that we have extended it on the menu for several months at a time. Irish Soda Bread is made with baking soda; no yeast. It is slightly sweet with raisins dotted throughout and a decorative X cut in the top. We love it toasted with some sweet cream butter.

King Cakes are Coming

King Cakes are coming. The King Cake is believed to have originated in France around the 12th century. These early Europeans celebrated the coming of the three wise men bearing gifts twelve days after Christmas calling it the Feast of the epiphany, Twelfth Night, or King's Day. The main part of the celebration was the baking of a King’s Cake to honor the three Kings. The cakes were made circular to portray the circular route used by the kings to get to the Christ Child, which was taken to confuse King Herod who was trying to follow the wise men so he could kill the Christ Child. In these early King Cakes a bean, pea, or coin was hidden inside the cake. The person who got the hidden piece was declared King for the day or was said to have good luck in the coming year. In Louisiana, Twelfth Night also signifies the beginning of the carnival season which ends with Mardi Gras Day. The bean, pea and the coin have been replaced by a small plastic baby to symbolize the Christ Child. The person who gets the baby is expected to carry on the carnival festivities by hosting the next King Cake party.

Our King Cakes are available by order in January and daily from February 1 to 9.
