Super Food

So the Ravens aren't in the Super Bowl. We're all a little blue about that. But you know you're going to watch the game, so why not make the best of it with some GH goodies? Here are some excellent ideas for you.
  • Bread bowls for dip - We have some very tasty dips that can be served in a hollowed out loaf of our round bread.
  • Pepperoni or Veggie Rolls - Inspired by lunches in the coal mines of West Virginia and Pennsylvania, this is a delightful, handheld treat. We stuff our Rolls full of pepperoni, cheese and a selection of peppers. Your guests will delight in their tastiness!
  • Sweet Treats! Get a tray of sweets including a selection of cookies, bars, scones and muffins. Yummy!
There are many more goodies for you to choose from! Stop by and check them out! We hope to see you soon. Your friends at the Great Harvest in Columbia.

The King Cake Story

We know you love our King Cakes. We thought it would be nice to share a little of the story behind them.

As part of the Christian faith, the coming of the wise men bearing gifts to the Christ Child is celebrated twelve days after Christmas. We refer to this as the Feast of the Epiphany or Little Christmas on the Twelfth Night. This is a time of celebration, exchanging gifts and feasting. Today, the tradition continues as people all over the world gather for festive Twelfth Night celebrations. A popular custom was and still is the baking of a special cake in honor of the three kings called "A King's Cake."

Inside every cake is a tiny baby (we put ours on the outside so you'll be sure to see it!). The tradition of having King Cake Parties has evolved through time, and the person who receives the slice of cake with the baby is asked to continue the festivities by hosting the next King Cake party.

Originally, King Cakes were a simple ring of dough with a small amount of decoration. Today's King Cakes are much more festive. We use our Challah Bread dough. We shape it in a ring, glaze it, frost it, and the it is covered with delicious sugar toppings in the traditional Mardi Gras colors of purple, green and gold.

Call us today and order yours now!

It Will Get Cold

Yes, we have been having some very nice weather for winter in Central Maryland. But we both know it's going to get cold. Yesterday, Paul made one of our Frontier Soup mixes for you to try. We also carry Maggie and Mary Soup. Many of these mixes can be prepared in under an hour with ingredients you may already have in your pantry. They are reasonably priced, allowing you to feed a family of four for under $4.00 per person (including all the add-ins)! We have mixes for vegetarians and meat lovers. Come check them out!

King Cake Countdown

We hear you loud and clear! When are the King Cakes coming? You can start ordering King Cakes now for pickup next week. Then, with Mardi Gras on February 21st, we will have them in store beginning the week before.

Sourdough is Back!
With everything we have to make in November and December, it's difficult to add Sourdough into the mix. Sourdough is a more labor intensive process involving a started that needs to be fed daily. Who can feed a starter (we can barely feed ourselves) when we have thousands of dinner rolls to make! But beginning today, we will Sourdough and Sourdough with Parmesan on Thursdays in January.
