Fall is Here

We trust all the kids got off to school safely and you enjoyed a leisurely day, sitting on the settee, reading and eating bonbons. He he he he he!

We are so happy fall is here! We can't wait to get some of our fall favorites back on the menu, like Apple Crunch, Irish Soda Bread and Spinach Feta. We made some fabulous Brioche for the Baker's Special a couple times this summer and it was a big hit so we will be offering it on Wednesdays in September.

New Fruit Butters

We have some new Fruit Butters from American Spoon that are perfect for fall. Come in and sample the Crabapple and Cranberry which are new as well as the Apple Butter. They are sure to be a hit!

High Holiday Countdown

We don't want you to panic but the Jewish Holidays are approaching fast! As you have observed in this space, we will have many delicious treats for your Holiday table. Many people ask why we have Round Challah for the Jewish Holidays. There are two reasons for this tradition. One says that the Round Challah represents a crown. The other says that the Round Challah represents the cyclical nature of the year. No matter what tradition you hold in your home, we hope you will come to us for your Round Challah.
We hope to see you soon. Your friends at the Great Harvest in Columbia.

Plan Ahead

School starts in a week and before you know it, you will be inundated with forms, fundraisers, enrollments, practice, homework, lessons... The list is potentially endless! Add to that list, pending holidays! The Jewish Holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are less than four weeks away. Have you thought about what you are serving? We have!

Many Favorites
We will naturally have Round Challah, plain or with raisins, but there are many other offerings for you. A GH favorite, Chocolate Babka will be available. We will also have a delectable Apple Honey Walnut Swirl bread and our delicious Vanilla Almond Swirl. We encourage you to order ahead. We will have all these breads available in the store but if you order (and pre-pay) before September 18th, you can be in and out of the bakery in a flash and onto friends and family.

Don't Forget the Honey!
Don't forget, we have wonderful local honey for your holiday table as well. Our honey comes from Elkridge so we are not kidding about it being local. There are two varieties to choose from. We recommend the Dark Honey, voted best in the county at the Howard County Fair this year.

We hope to see you soon. Your friends at the Great Harvest in Columbia.

New Treat for You

We have been interested in making Brioche for quite some time. If you aren't familiar with it, Brioche is a cake-like bread made with eggs, butter and sugar. It is traditionally French and many people characterize it as being more pastry than bread. Brioche is often baked in a fluted pan and has a little knob on top. It can have sweet or savory fillings. We won't be that adventurous today, but you know how we like to try new things.

Like all our Baker's Specials, expect the Brioche to go fast. Stop by early to get yours.

And for you scone lovers, today's scone is Maple Oat Nut. This little reminder of the flavors of fall is perfect with a cup of nice hot coffee. So what if it was 75 at 7:00? Pretend that it's October.

We hope to see you soon. Your friends at the Great Harvest in Columbia.

Buy Local!

You've probably seen all the reports on how much better it is for the environment and the economy to buy local products. With a shorter distance to travel from the farm (or factory) to the store, there are less emissions released into the environment and often, local products are less expensive then those that come from 100 or more miles away.

We offer several local products for you to choose from at Great Harvest (not including our wonderful bread, baked goods and mixes).

One of our favorite local products is the honey that we sell. We are so pleased to let you know that we have received a new delivery of our friend Karen's local honey. Karen lives in Elkridge and keeps bees right in her backyard and they make some of the best honey you have ever had. We can't definitely say that there is a health benefit to local honey but we do know that Karen's honey tastes GREAT! Karen's honey is fantastic with a little butter on some Honey Whole Wheat Bread.

All the hand crafted pottery is made by artisans who live in the Baltimore-Washington Metro area. And you read here that our coffee from Cafe Pronto is roasted in Annapolis. There's nothing as tasty as a fresh brewed cup of coffee in a beautifully formed, highly colorful mug. Some of us like to take that first sip outside. Try it sometime! You may never drink a cup of coffee inside again.

New Month, Same Menu

Remember, our menu stays the same all summer. We know you have too much to do with all the swim meets. barbecues, trips to the beach etc, to have to worry about a new bread menu. Everything will stay the same until September. If you have a hankering for a bread you miss from the winter, give us a call on Tuesdays. We've been known to let the occasional customer decide on the Baker's Special.

We hope to see you soon. Your friends at the Great Harvest in Columbia.
