Tropical Heat

We know you don't want to cook in this tropical heat and that is why sandwiches are the perfect summer meal, especially when they are served up on our fresh, delicious breads! Here are a couple ideas for you.

Got Veggies?
You know Uncle Sam wants you to have 5 servings a day, and right about now, all those wonderful veggies you planted this spring should be ready for plucking. We recommend you slice up some tomatoes, cukes, grab a handful of fresh lettuce and throw it all between two slices of our grainy bread, like High Five Fiber or Whole Grain Goodness. Add a little spreadable cheese, and a couple leaves of basil and you will not be sad.

Barbecue. Yummmmm...
Our Challah Rolls make the perfect bread for a little pulled pork. A quick and easy way to make it is cook a couple pork chops and the pull them apart into little shredded bits. Add your favorite barbecue sauce, heat and serve. Cook the meat early in the day before it gets too hot out and serve it with some chips, coleslaw and fresh lemonade.

Picnic anyone?
Have you figured out that kids really enjoy eating outside? Make dinner really easy and have a family picnic outside. Don't bother with fancy, gourmet foods. Grab a loaf of Old Fashion White Bread and throw together some good old PB&J. Yes, for dinner! It has lots of protein and you know your kids will eat it. It's summer, have fun. You can serve a lovely fruit salad or some cherries and watermelon so you can have a seed spitting contest.

Don't forget it's Wednesday!
Today's Baker's Special is Mediterranean Olive.

It's a Dog's World

While we don't encourage you to feed your dogs our tasty, fresh bread, we realize dogs are often crafty enough to help themselves. We've compiled quite a lot of stories of dogs who steal bread. Here are a few.

We have many stories of stolen Challah. Joy and Misty, two Golden Retrievers who live in Long Reach, really love Challah, especially Joy who is also partial to peaches. Joy has eaten entire bags of Challah rolls, minus the plastic. Monty and Casey, Jane and Pat's dogs, also love Challah. Beasley and Sam, Carol's Basset Hounds also love Challah, but they are strictly limited to a raw food diet.

It's very frustrating to have a dog who enjoys specialty breads that are only available once a week. Take it from the poor woman whose two dogs ate her Woodstock bread. Woodstock, a whole grain, whole wheat bread with flaxseed, sunflower seeds, walnuts and pecans, is only baked on Tuesdays. When the poor woman came back to replace her bread, she had to settle for something else.

Hadley, a Schnoodle, who is also known as the Black Fur-ball of Doom comes running when he hears the sound of the bread bag opening. He has been known to jump up and steal your Honey Whole Wheat bread as you are putting it into your mouth. Hadley loves a little Naturally Nutty Almond Butter on his bread.

This is Why we Have Dog Treats!
If you can't resist the big eyes and the wagging tail and you really need to get something tasty and fresh for your dogs, we recommend our Dog Treats. They are made with the same whole grain whole wheat that goes into many of our breads, but they don't have many of the other ingredients that may not agree with your pup's delicate constitution. We usually make Dog Treats weekly so you can sure that they are very fresh.

We hope to see you soon, like tomorrow at the Oakland Mills Farmer's Market.

We Love Wednesday!

Why you ask? Because it's the day we get to bake whatever we want! No rigid menu constraints will hold us back. We dig back in our memories and resurrect something yummy to tease you with. Today's Baker's Special is Columbia Crunch. This bread has a little of everything in it, fruit, nuts, grains. It's great with jam and we have quite an assortment from Stonewall Kitchen for you to choose from. Remember, the Baker's Specials go fast. Call and reserve one or come in for one after 9:30.

Don't Let it Go Bad
Wondering what to do with all that summer fruit? How about some waffles? Our Pancake Mix is whole grain, with rolled oats and makes some terrific waffles to top with peaches, blueberries, strawberries or cherries.

Come see us soon. Maybe tomorrow at the East Columbia Library Farmer's Market!

The Summer Reading Issue

We love to read and summer gives us so many chances to open a great book. Here are a list of some of our favorite books and some of our favorite treats to go with them.

Anything by Jodi Picoult. Jodi Picoult's books really make you think and feel and definitely require some major comfort food. We can't think of anything better to go with a Jodi Picoult book then Chocolate Brownie Bread. Cut it in small, bite size pieces so you don't mess up your library book!

"Breaking Dawn" by Stephanie Meyer, the fourth in the Twilight series. You may have seen the movie based on the first book. The story of Edward and Bella ends in the fourth and final book of the series. We won't give away any plot details. Grab a loaf of Cheddar Garlic, fire up the George Foreman grill and make a grilled cheese and tomato sandwich and indulge in this book that will make you feel 17 again.

Captain Underpants books by Dav Pilkey are a great way to get your kids to read over the summer. These "graphic novels" about adorable Harold and George and their mischievous antics will help your child fulfill their school's summer reading requirement. We recommend Peanut Butter and Jelly on Old Fashioned White for anything by Pilkey. He would be delighted to see the sticky fingerprints on his books.

Of course, we love a great book about cooking and what better than "Julie and Julia," by Julie Powell. Powell tells her wonderful story of her ambitious desire to cook her way through Julia Child's "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" in one year. You will want to fire up the stove and try your hand at one of Child's very French recipes. But it is summer and we don't want you to heat up your house too much. May we recommend a Baguette with some Vanilla Honey Butter to tide you over until the weather cools?

Enjoy your summer reading! Your friends at the Great Harvest in Columbia.

Summer Yum

It's Wednesday so that means we get to tickle your taste buds with a delicious bread from the archives. Today's treat is Red Pepper Swiss. Remember, we make our Baker's Special Breads in small batches. If you need this bread come early.

Treats from the Garden
A trip to a local picking farm yielded too much fruit for one of our employee's family to eat so she brought in the extra and boy was it good! We had tart cherry and blueberry scones and pies. When the herbs in all our gardens start coming in, we will get really creative with our Foccacia and Sour Dough.

Farmer's Market
Don't forget to visit us at the East Columbia Library Farmer's Market on Thursdays and the Oakland Mills Market on Sundays. We have a sampling of all the goodies from the store; Dog Treats, Granola, Cookie Mix, and of course breads, cookies and sweet breads like Pumpkin Chocolate Chip.

Our breads stay fresh on the counter for seven to ten days. Just keep them out of the sun.

Oops!
Our yummy Nutty Heath Bar Crunch scones are a little flat today. Our loss is your gain. We are selling them for $1.50 each or four for $5.00. They're sure to go fast so head in soon!
