A Little History Lesson

One of our favorite breads in our Holiday Stollen. We love a bread with a rich history. Let us tell you about Stollen, with a little help from Wikipedia.

Stollen is a bread-like fruitcake made with yeast, water and flour, and usually with zest added to the dough. We also add some dried fruit to ours.
The tradition of baking Christmas Stollen in Dresden is very old. Christmas Stollen in Dresden was already baked in the 15th century.
In 1560, the bakers of Dresden offered the rulers of Saxony Christmas Stollen weighing 36 pounds each as gift, and the custom continued.
Augustus II the Strong (1670–1733) was the Elector of Saxony, King of Poland and the Grand Duke of Lithuania. The King loved pomp, luxury, splendour and feasts. In 1730, he impressed his subjects, ordering the Bakers’ Guild of Dresden to make a giant 1.7-tonne Stollen, big enough for everyone to have a portion to eat. There were around 24,000 guests who were taking part in the festivities on the occasion of the legendary amusement festivity known as Zeithainer Lustlager. For this special occasion, the court architect Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann (1662-1737), built a particularly oversized Stollen oven. An oversized Stollen knife also had been designed solely for this occasion.
Today, the festival takes place on the Saturday before the second Sunday in Advent, and the cake weighs between three and four tonnes. A carriage takes the cake in a parade through the streets of Dresden to the Christmas market, where it is ceremoniously cut into pieces and distributed among the crowd, for a small sum which goes to charity. A special knife, the Grand Dresden Stollen Knife, a silver-plated knife, 1.60 meters long weighing 12 kg, which is a copy of the lost baroque original knife from 1730, is used to festively cut the oversize Stollen at the Dresden Christmas fair.
We don't make gigantic Stollen like they do in Dresden. But ours is pretty darn yummy. This is the last week to get your Stollen. And remember, we will be open next Sunday, December 23rd from 9AM to 3PM and on Monday, December 24th from noon to 3PM.
We hope to see you soon! Your friends at the Great Harvest in Columbia.

Grab and Go!

Are you looking for a delicious lunch item that you can grab and go? Something you can eat on the run without worrying about ketchup on your lap? Do we have a good one for you! Come and try one of our Pepperoni or Veggie Rolls!

Many people say the Pepperoni Roll was originally convenient lunch eaten by coal miners in West Virginia and Pennsylvania. Take a stick of pepperoni and some cheese, wrap it in bread dough and bake. It didn't require refrigeration and was hearty enough for the appetite of a hard-working miner.

Our Pepperoni and Veggie Rolls are slightly different. We take sliced pepperoni, mozzarella cheese and your choice of banana peppers, sweet peppers (or no peppers) and envelope them in pizza dough. We bake them until they are golden brown. If you can catch them right out of the oven, you may never eat anything else for lunch again. Not a pepperoni fan? Then try a Veggie Roll.  The selection of veggies varies, but they will delight you.

Our Pepperoni Rolls make a great Raven's game time treat, too! Howard County can't go wrong cheering the Ravens with these on the table.

We hope to see you soon! Your friends at the Great Harvest in Columbia.

What's New?

Did you notice that we have a few new items on the menu this month? You did? You want to know more? Prepare yourself for the enticing details!

Sonoma Bread
This bread is sort of like our Holiday Stollen. It has oranges and lemons, as well as an assortment of fruits, nuts and seeds in a half white, half wheat bread. It's a hearty breakfast bread and makes an excellent setting for your favorite chicken salad (which we assume is ours!)

Nacho Bread
Looking for something new and exciting for your football fare? Look no more! Imagine all your favorite nacho ingredients wrapped up in a bread. Nacho bread has two kinds of cheese, olive, jalapeños, tomatoes, garlic and taco seasoning. Brush it with some garlic infused olive oil and throw it on the grill. Or make a kicking grilled cheese and sit back with a cold frosty one and watch the Ravens win!

Zucchini Chocolate Chip Bread
Poor zucchini. It's really such a slighted vegetable. Everyone ends up with too much of it in their garden and then what do they do? They shred it to bits and trick their kids by baking it into cakes, muffins and batter breads. Well, now we are too. But we expect full disclosure from you when you give it to your young ones as their after school treat. They'll love it so much, they won't mind the extra dose of goodness!

Come in and check out the rest of the menu, and don't forget to turn in your Rosh Hashanah orders by September 13th! We hope to see you soon! Your friends at the Great Harvest in Columbia.

Healthy Lunch

With the first day of school right around the corner, we know you are desperate for some healthy lunch ideas. The Healthy Lunch Challenge winner from Maryland, our buddy Sam (pictured with his new friend, Sam Kass, White House Chef) might have some ideas for you. His recipe for Sizzling Tofu with Green Onions and Sugar Snap Peas won him a trip to the White House this week! Of course, that isn't every kids idea of a good lunch. If your kids like things that are more standard, such as a nice sandwich, why not start with some of the wonderful GH breads? Our whole grain breads are a great choice and whole grains are known to be very nutritious and their complex carbohydrates keep you going a lot longer than those grocery store breads that are full of sugar and fillers. Blech!

We also have a fantastic selection of Frontier  and Maggie and Mary Soup Mixes. Many of them can be prepared in a jiffy - under an hour! Or you can whip up a pot on the weekend and send it for lunch in a thermos. By the way, Sam is a big fan of soup for lunch. He LOVES the Frontier Asparagus Almond Soup!

Come in and get more lunch ideas. We hope to see you soon! Your friends at the Great Harvest in Columbia.

You may not remember what you were doing 40 years ago this summer, but there were a few guys who were pretty busy breaking and entering into the DNC offices in the Watergate Complex. Hence the beginning of the Watergate Scandal that brought down a president and made two Washington Post reporters (Woodward and Bernstein) pretty famous guys.

What does this have to do with GH, you ask? Not a lot except that yesterday, this blogger saw ROBERT REDFORD!!! It's sort of a long story and we'll spare you the details, but things will never be the same for me, with the image of this perfect specimen of a man permanently affixed in my mind.

Back to the baked goods! Come celebrate this celebrity sighting with some Outrageous Brownies, Bodacious Blondies or potentially, the World's Best Oatmeal Raisin Cookies.

Like to Bake? We KNEAD YOU!

Great Harvest Columbia is seeking a smart, energetic, reliable person to help create fresh, made-from-scratch whole grain breads and sweets! Our oven fires up at 4:00 AM.

Great Harvest Columbia strives to create an upbeat and rewarding work environment.

Kneaded - - part time team members! We have various positions open and we can be very flexible.

Kneaders - needed to help us get the bread dough ready for the oven. The hours are about 20 per week if you can work Monday through Friday - - we will hire people who can work 2 days or more. This is an active job and lifting and standing for several hours are required. The work environment is fun! We play tunes and have lots of time to talk while we knead. You will learn a lot and earn some dough! You get to take some bread home with you after each shift. Oh! And a paycheck every couple weeks!

Bakers - This is a key position that requires someone who can multi-task, is highly organized and can use good judgement to move our product in and out of the oven. You have  to able to deal with the oven and move about 100 pans of bread around the baking process. This too is about 20 hours a week if you can work 5 days. The normal shift is 6:00 AM to 11:00 AM.

Not everyone is cut out to work in a bakery but the job is steady, the people are fun and the days go fast! Where else can you wear shorts to work all year and earn some dough?

So spread the word! Our best employees come from referrals.

Interested candidates should call us at 443-542-5912.

Thanks!

We know there are many, many amazing women in our community who are training for the Iron Girl Triathlon next month. First, we have to say, WOW! We are impressed.

We know that what you eat during training is important, and whole grains are a great addition to any athlete's diet. We are proud to say that we offer two whole grain breads every day, including Honey Whole Wheat, Woodstock, High Five Fiber, Whole Grain Goodness, Dakota and Nine Grain. Check our bread schedule for details. The link is at the bottom of this post.

We hope to see you soon. Your friends at the Great Harvest in Columbia.

Summer Reading Edition

It's a relatively short list this summer, but we know you'll enjoy learning which of our baked delights go best with your other summer indulgences.

Read about the world of riches and tragedy in The Great Gatsby before the upcoming movie! In honor of Jay's excessive spending, splurge on a box of our delightful scones!

We've read 50 Shades of Grey, and we're embarrassed about it. We're also embarrassed when we accidentally ate a whole six pack of Snickerdoodles. Let's get them both over with in one deliciously shameful afternoon.

Want to be better than your friends and actually READ the Game of Thrones series? Then do it one better and also make the switch to 100% whole grain breads. Woodstock is particularly delicious, though somewhat lacking in bloodshed and incest.

If you need more ideas about what to eat when you read, stop by and ask for suggestions. We hope to see you soon! Your friends at the Great Harvest in Columbia.
